The Wii U gamepad and the PSP Vita are both touchscreen devices. The vice-president of Sony Worldwide Studios, Scott Rodhe, says that the PSP Vita is better. (Well it is the vice-president of the company that developed the PSP Vita. So it was completley biased). He’s basing it on the fact that the “Wii U tablet doesn’t have a processor in it.” Unlike the Wii U tablet, the PSP Vita and the 3DS are handheld gaming devices. Like the PSP Vita, the 3DS has it’s own processor; also like the PSP Vita, the 3DS can connect to a console. I believe that Nintendo has already confirmed that the Wii U will be no more than about $300 (USD). The PSP Vita was about $500 (also USD) when it first came out. Then there’s the additional memory. I don’t remember exactly how much it is to get more memory storage for the PSP Vita, but it’s a lot.
“That Wii U tablet doesn’t have a processor in it, so it’s got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV.”
“We can do some pretty special things that you’ll start to see on the [E3] floor this year and you’ll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that’s in your hand as well.”
“It’s only been three months though, just three months. There are a lot of games on that machine and I think what we have to hang our hat on… Every single person that actually picks that thing up absolutely loves it.”

In a recent interview with Globe and Mail, Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, has stated that the Nintendo Wii U isn’t all about power. Despite what you think, Reggie does have a point about what he says. Look at the quoted text below:
The Globe and Mail: Nintendo is sticking with its traditional hardware cycle [five to seven years], but Some people are expressing concern that Wii U might date itself quickly…
Reggie Fils-Aime: Three comments. First, it’s not about power. If it was about power, then the GameCube would have been the number one system in its generation and the Wii wouldn’t have been the number one system in this last generation. It is not about power. It is about fun, it is about the experience.
Second. Our competitors can say what they want about some super long cycle, but let’s see what their behaviours are.”
Thirdly, the way development works is that the longer developers work with a system, the better they can tune performance. Case in point: Look at the very first GameCube games, and compare them to a game like Resident Evil 4. It was graphically beautiful, and demonstrably more advanced than the first GameCube games.
Full interview here.
What do you think? I think Reggie makes a fine point there.

Nintendo has recently revealed yet another controller for the Nintendo Wii U called the “Wii U Pro Controller”. It is based basically on a similar design to Microsoft’s XBox 360 controller aside from that it moves the Analog sticks to the top with the A, B, X, Y buttons below the right analog stick. There are also two sets of buttons above the analog stick which are L, R, LZ, and RZ, I assume. I see nothing about a “C” button though.
The controller is to appeal to traditional gamers that play games such as “Call of Duty” as well as helping developers develop more traditional games outside using the Wii U Gamepad (the tablet) as well as the Wiimotes.
Like the controller? Give us a shout out on our forums!

We now have an image of the latest Wii U controller design thanks to a QA tester at Traveler’s Tales Games. He uploaded the image at left to his Twitter account a few days ago. Since then the Image has been removed and the Twitter account deleted.
The biggest change we can see in the controller is the replacement of circle pads with analog sticks. Also, the start and select buttons have relocated from the bottom-center of the controller to the right side of the screen.
Also, notice the gray charging cable on the top left of the controller? It looks very similar to the 3DS charger; perhaps they are compatible?
How do you feel about the new design? What would you like changed?

Nintendo has revealed that it plans to amaze the hardcore gamers with the Wii U first instead of the Mass Market. Iwata has explained that the company has learned their mistakes with the Wii, and won’t be using a ton of effort to win casual gamers with the Wii U. Iwata explained that it was hard to get those hardcore gamers to take the Wii seriously, but they plan to have an easier time with the Wii U. Honestly, I think the Wii U would’ve done a lot better if it had stronger graphics. But the Wii U will have that.
“The Wii was able to reach a large number of new consumers who had never played games before by bringing hands-on experiences with its Wii Sports and Wii Fit,” he explained.
“However, we could not adequately create the situation that such new consumers played games frequently or for long, consistent periods. As a result, we could not sustain a good level of profit.
“Moreover, regrettably, what we prioritised in order to reach out to the new audience was a bit too far from what we prioritised for those who play games as their hobby. Consequently, we presume some people felt that the Wii was not a game system for them or they were not willing to play with the Wii even though some compelling games had been released.”
“Once consumers have a notion that ‘this system is not for us’, we have learned that it is extremely difficult to change their perceptions later,” said Iwata.
“Therefore, in promoting the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, we have announced that we would like ‘width’ and ‘depth’ to coexist.
“With the Nintendo DS and the Wii, the approach of ‘width’ was well accepted by many people; however, what we did in terms of ‘depth’ was not satisfactory for some consumers. This time, we would like consumers to be satisfied in both aspects.
“In order to do so, we started to work on the ‘depth’ aspect first, and the current and existing software you can see for the Nintendo 3DS is based on that idea. In the future, the approach will evolve,” he continued.
“Our approach for the Wii U is basically the same. By doing so continuously, we are expecting that the number of game users per household will increase and as the gaming population increases, we believe we can create a sustainable video game market.”

I’ve looked on some websites for what the Wii U will be like. Here are some rumors on how much the Wii U may cost.
- Manufacuring cost (including controller) is predicted to be around $180.
- Controllers total bill of materials won’t cost any more than $50.
- Wii U will be no less than $300 when launched.
- NFC capabilities for each Wii U controller costs no more than $5 to implement.
- Price of NFC implemetation in mobile devices is expected to fall below $1 in the future.
- Microsoft’s Kinect costs $56 after taking it apart
- The Wii U’s controller is expected to be slightly less than what a Kinect costs.
Personally, I have no idea what an NFC is. Keep in mind that this hasn’t been confirmed by Nintendo yet. I don’t think a Wii U will be over $300. I don’t know anything for Europe, Australia, or Asia yet.

Seems like there are more news on the Nintendo Wii U console. First off, some developers have said the price to develop a game on next generation consoles like the Nintendo Wii U costs more due to increased resolution, increased amount of polygons, and developmental time.
As for MMORPGS, Funcom developer, Joel Bylos, has stated that he feels the Nintendo Wii U could be the best home console for MMORPGS due to the tablet.
“Wii U could be the first real console on which running an MMORPG without compromise is plausible. The controller is perfect for lining up those rows of hotbars that are essential in most MMOs. A customisable touchscreen interface combined with the 3D spatial movement of a console controller could be a winner.”

It seems like the release date for the Nintendo Wii U is rumored to be November 18th, 2012 for North America. The system will be launched out in Japan a week after this. There are no words on the European release date as the email leak failed to specify that information.
