When discussing about the next Legend of Zelda handheld title Eiji Aonuma has stated that the next Legend of Zelda 3DS title wouldn't have had any connection to the recent Zelda titles.[4] As well, Shigeru Miyamoto has stated before that he wanted to make another game similar to A Link to the Past.[5]

Gameplay
The Magic Hammer was shown in game and was used to smash down a platform to boost onto a higher level. Link can use Sword Beam attacks as well as the Spin Attack. A new feature is that Link can turn into a wall drawing (when the player presses A) to get past certain areas or see things from a new perspective. All of these abilities drain the green meter on the bottom left of the top screen for reasons unknown.[6]
Wall Drawing
The wall drawing is a new mechanic in A Link Between Worlds. The drawing ability was inspired by Phantom Ganon from Ocarina of Time who could jump from painting to painting.[7]
Light and Dark Worlds
A Link Between Worlds will include a Light World and Dark World mechanic similar to A Link to the Past.[7]

[...] From a story perspective there are connections, so it does fall after A Link to the Past. And it's set in the same world, but introduces that new gameplay mechanic. So, yeah, I guess by that definition..." - Bill Trinen, http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/new-3ds-zelda-falls-after-a-link-to-the-past/
