Story
After the events of Ocarina of Time, young Link sets out to find an unnamed friend, presumably Navi, with whom he parted ways after defeating Ganon. Atop his noble steed, Epona, Link ventures through the Lost Woods, only to be attacked by a masked imp, the Skull Kid. Accompanied by two fairies, Tatl and Tael, the Skull Kid steals both Epona and the Ocarina of Time, the sacred instrument Link received from Princess Zelda. Link follows them through the forest and into a cave, where he falls a down a deep hole. The Skull Kid then casts a curse on Link, transforming him into a hapless Deku Scrub. Leaving him to his fate, the Skull Kid and Tael exit at once, leaving Tatl, who was making fun of Deku Link, behind. She is quick to apologize, insisting that she and Link work together to find the Skull Kid and Tael, who is her younger brother.
Hot on the trail of the Skull Kid, Link happens upon the Happy Mask Salesman in the Clock Tower. In exchange for the mask that Skull Kid is wearing, plus the precious instrument that was stolen from Link, he promises a way to turn Link back to his former self. Upon entering Clock Town, Link and Tatl learn that the moon is dangerously close to the land of Termina, set to crash into it in three short days. At midnight of the third day, Link and Tatl confront the Skull Kid. Tael blurts out that they need the assistance of the four giants of the swamp, mountains, ocean, and canyons, but as there are only hours left until the moon wipes out everything, Link is only able to retrieve his ocarina.
The Happy Mask Salesman keeps up his end of the bargain and teaches Link a song that has the power to contain the curse from the Skull into a mask of his own.
