Story
The Wind Waker takes place many centuries after Ocarina of Time. It is set on the setting of the Great Sea with many islands to explore.
When the game is first started, and you make a new file, you see the tale of Ganondorf being sealed away. Ganondorf was defeated using the Master Sword, also know as the Blade of Evil's Bane. After the Hero of Time in the story left the kingdom, Ganon returned to the world after the Sages' seal broke and Ganondorf escaped the Evil Realm.
Then Link starts on Outset Island. It's Link's birthday. Link's sister, Aryll, gives you the Telescope for a day. Link then starts to look around and notices a large bird, the Helmaroc King, carrying Tetra. After Tetra's Pirates hit the large bird with a cannonball, Tetra is dropped in a large forest on the summit of the mountain. Link quickly obtains his sword through training with Orca, and then go and attempts to save Tetra. Link's sister follows him to the top of the mountain and is then captured by the immense bird.
Link talks with the pirates in order to try to stow away on their ship to get his sister. When Tetra refuses to, the Rito postman appears and he talks to Tetra, telling her if her and her pirates never came to Outset, then Aryll would have never been captured. He goes on to say the girls with long ears have been captured all across the Great Sea and that the bird mistook Aryll for Tetra.
Link then returns back to his grandmother to get his shield while she cries about Aryll being taken away. After parting from her, he talks to Tetra and gets on her boat to sail to the Forsaken Fortress, where his sister was.
After being stuff into a barrel, shot to the island, and getting through the entire fortress, Link manages to reclaim the sword he lost and attempts to save his sister. While he entered the room, the Helmaroc King appears and snatches Link in his mouth and then bring him to the Shadow of the Forsaken Fortress. The shadow gestures the bird to toss Link into the sea, where Link is rescued by the King of Red Lions.
The boat tells you that the large bird is controlled by Ganondorf, the evil demon from legends. He also explains that Link needs the three Goddess Pearls to gain the power he needs to rescue his sister. After Link does these tasks, he goes underwater to the now flooded Hyrule. Time has stopped for unknown reasons and Link sets off to retrieve the Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane.
Link then returns to the Forsaken Fortress to save his sister again. While there he runs into Phantom Ganon, a ghostly apparition of Ganondorf. After slaying the ghost, Link is awarded with the Skull Hammer which allows him to smash switches and enemies. Link then manages to rescue his sister from her cell and then comes face to face with Helmaroc King again. Link manages to defeat the Helmaroc King at the top of the Forsaken Fortress and then heads off to defeat Ganondorf.
Though he was somewhat courageous, Link fails to even make a scratch on Ganondorf, who easily knocked Link aside and drew his sword to Link's face, stating that the Master Sword no longer had the power to repel evil like it once did. Tetra then jumps through a window and knocks Ganondorf slightly to give Link time to get up, but Ganondorf grabbed her and attempted to kill her until her necklace and Ganondorf's Triforce of Power began to glow. Ganondorf then realizes that Tetra is the girl he was looking for, Princess Zelda.
Before Ganondorf could grab Tetra's piece of the Triforce, Komoli and the Rito Postman grabbed Link and Tetra before Valoo, the Wind Spirit, appeared and set the top of the Forsaken Fortress on fire.
Link then goes back to the Hyrule Castle, and the King of Red Lions reveals he is the King of Hyrule. He explains about how what happened to Hyrule and the royal family, then merges Tetra's piece of the Triforce of Wisdom with his own, changing Tetra into Princess Zelda.
Zelda is forced to stay in the castle while Link and the King of Hyrule try to find out why the Master Sword lost its power. They discover that the two sages have been killed. One was a Zora named Laruto, and the other was a Kokiri boy named Fado. Then Link goes on a journey to find the Sages, one a Rito named Medli and the other a Korok named Makar.
Once Link aids Medli and Makar into the boss chambers and defeats the bosses of the Earth Temple and Wind Temple, the two sages began their respective prayers and filled the Master Sword with the power to repel evil once more.
After Link gets the power to repel evil back into the Master Sword, Link and the King of Red Lions learn that the Forsaken Fortress has been abandoned. The King of the Red Lions then urges Link to quickly find the eight shards of the Triforce of Courage in order to return back to the depths of the castle. Once Link finds the pieces and completes the Triforce, they return to the Tower of the Gods and present the Triforce piece to the Gods. The Triforce then chooses Link as the new hero and the King of Red Lions calls Link the Hero of Winds.
They then return to Hyrule Castle and figure out that Ganondorf has found Zelda and kidnapped her. Then Link goes to Ganon's Tower to go and defeat the evil king and has to fight the four bosses earlier in the game again as well as Phantom Ganon. Once Link acquires the Light Arrow, Link defeats Phantom Ganon and uses his sword to unlock the route to saving Princess Zelda. Ganondorf states that the Gods destroyed Hyrule before he morphs himself into Puppet Ganon. Link then uses the Light Arrows to defeat Puppet Ganon and then climbs to the top of Ganon's Tower.
At the top of the tower, Ganondorf remissness about his old homeland, the Gerudo Desert and compared to how hard it was to live in the desert when compared to how the Hyrulians lived. Ganondorf then recombines the Triforce pieces into the Triforce and was about to make his wish to expose Hyrule once more. But the King quickly touches the Triforce and wishes that all of Hyrule is washed away and that Link and Zelda survive. Enraged after what has just happened, Ganondorf faces Link and Zelda in a duel. Link attacks Ganondorf with his Master Sword while Princess Zelda uses his Light Arrows to stun Ganondorf. Zelda shoots a Light Arrow off Link's Mirror Shield which is reflected at Ganondorf. Ganondorf is then stabbed in the forehead and dies, and the spirit of the King of Hyrule stays in Hyrule, perishing with the Kingdom.
Zelda returns back as Tetra, and her and Link are saved by Tetra's Pirates. Her, Aryll and Link then return to Outset Island. Afterwhich, Link and Tetra sail to find a new land to call New Hyrule.
Game Play
The types of controls Wind Waker used is near the same of Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time, and his attacking, defending, running, and jumping-off-ledges are some of these examples. Link also uses the lock-on system seen in Ocarina of Time. There is also an addition to this control system though, the ability to parry. When an enemy locked on to has not seen you, when you go into his view the enemy will make a visual cue and a vibration to the controller, during this the next attack the enemy does will be dodged and you can kill the enemy right after you do your dodging.
Link may also move his eyes towards a hidden enemy or an objective to a puzzle. For example, if an enemy is hidden in a jar and you can't see him, Link may look at the jar that the enemy is in. Break the jar and there he is.
A reoccurring feature in the Zelda Franchise is the dungeons, with their items, their bosses, and the basic enemies. The common weapons that Link will use during this is the Sword and the Shield. But Link does expand his use of items. Many of the other items he uses is the boomerang, bombs, bow and arrow, and the grappling hook. You may also pick up enemies' dropped weapons, a new addition to the Zelda Franchise. Along with the main quest, there are also side quests.
After the game's completion, a re run of the game lets you start off with different items and other additions. You now can start off with a Deluxe Picto Box, Aryll now wears a pirate dress given to her by the pirates, Link also knows Hylian, and Link may wear his beginning suit through the whole game.
